CPSU standing up for public service jobs

THE Federal CPSU is ramping up its campaign in support of public sector jobs. In a recent interview CPSU National Secretary Nadine Flood said Australia was now at the point where the Federal Government was cutting frontline jobs, and services such as Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support were some of the hardest hit.

For the Australian community Ms Flood said this ultimately meant lower quality services and longer waiting times. So waiting on that Centrelink payment or for the Call Centre Operator to answer is likely to take longer.

Frontline public sector staff are already copping the brunt of customer frustration at longer wait times. A recent CPSU survey found many frontline staff were saying customer abuse was increasing, with a significant proportion facing customer aggression and violence. Ms Flood said last month a customer head-butted a Western Australian Centrelink staff member. In another incident in New South Wales saw a frontline worker threatened with a machete. Recently in Far North Queensland police were called to one service three times in the same week.
