Kevin Harkins to stick with Unions Tas
Unions Tasmania Secretary Kevin Harkins won’t nominate for the Senate vacancy after Nick Sherry’s resignation announcement.
On Thursday Mr Harkins said: “I have thought about it overnight, had discussions with Union colleagues and have decided that I will be of more value to the Union movement and workers by staying where I am for now”. “It is highly likely that we will soon face an extremely conservative federal government and the Union movement in Tasmania will need strong leadership. Defending the rights of working people is, and always has been my priority”.
Mr Harkins said he hoped the ALP chose wisely and respected the recommendations of the 2010 election review that suggested renewal was important to the ALP’s future success.
“While Lin Thorp is a personal friend I think it is important to select someone that will fight vigorously for Tasmania. There are a number of possible candidates who are prepared to do just that and I wish them all well,” Mr Harkins said.
