Media company’s dangerous move
IT’S not just mining companies looking to get rid of Aussie workers. Now newspapers are too. Fairfax has announced its intention to relocate the editorial production positions at a number of regional newspapers, including the Illawarra Mercury and Newcastle Herald, to New Zealand. Yesterday Fairfax editorial staff in Melbourne, Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle voted to strike for 36 hours in protest over the relocation plan. The plan will see 56 FTE positions affected. The Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance called the move dangerous, saying the move would hinder these newspapers from telling quality local news, which is the reason for the papers’ existence.
