LATEST ABS figures show the number of Tasmanians in full-time employment dropped from 150,800 in April to 150,600 in May. Figures for total employed people in the state reflected this drop, falling from 233,600 April to 233,400 in May. Despite these job losses, the unemployment rate remained unchanged for the month. In May last year the unemployment rate for Tasmania was 5.4%, compared to 7.3% in May 2012 In trend terms, the participation rate fell 1% to 60.6% from April to May in our state. Australia’s unemployment rate rose 0.2% to 5.1% in May, with the number of people unemployed increasing by 22,400 people to 622,800 during the month. The Labour Force statistics revealed labour force participation rate increased 0.3% in May to 65.5%.
