ABC ready to consult about TV production in Tassie.
NO FINAL decision’s been made to close Tasmanian ABC television production.
ABC Managing Director Mark Scott confirmed this in a letter to the CPSU Tasmania Regional Secretary Paul Blake, saying the only decision that was made was a proposal to close TV production in the state.
In the letter Mr Scott said he was ready to consult with the union about these proposed changes.
“We welcome the announcement that no decision has been reached,” Mr Blake said.
“We believe any decision to close Tasmanian production would be premature and pre-empt their findings.”
A Hobart rally is planned for next Tuesday, details to be advised.
The 16 jobs in TV production, which would be lost under the proposal, represents close to a fifth of the ABC’s total workforce in Tasmania.
“The ABC has been beating a retreat from local programming for some time now but this decision demonstrates its lack of commitment to Tasmania, our stories and our voice,” Mr Blake said.
Mr Blake told the ABC News there would be more talks with management early next week.
