Grim economic stats for Tassie
THE latest Commsec State of the States paints a grim picture of Tasmania’s economic performance.
Out of all states and territories, Tasmania performed the worst in:
- Economic growth (the weakest trend growth of -3.2%)
- Retail trade (spending down 5.1% compared to a year ago);
- Population growth (growth of 0.16% is the weakest in almost 11 years) and 80% below the decade average of 0.81%); and
- Construction work (overall construction activity is just 0.6% above its decade average).
Our state was also one of the weakest performers in unemployment, with the trend unemployment rate the highest in the nation at7.0% and 17.1% above the decade average of 6.0%).
Housing finance and home building figures are also poor.
