Australian underemployment

NEW Australian Bureau of Statistics figures revealed there were 784,000 underemployed workers in Australia in September 2012.

Of these, 730,900 usually worked part time but would prefer more hours, with over a quarter of 15-24 year old part timers wanting to work more.

64% of underemployed part time workers were women and 36% were men

61% underemployed part time workers would rather not change their employer to work more hours.

The median duration of insufficient work for underemployed part timers was 26 weeks, with older people generally having a longer period of underemployment.

In September 2012 1.2 million of the 8.2 million full time workers had worked less than 35 hours during the reference week.
