Union questions Integrity Commission release
ABC Tasmania, 27 June, original article here .
The Justice Department has dismissed concerns the Integrity Commission has prejudiced ongoing misconduct complaints.
The Department’s investigating employees involved in running Risdon Prison’s store and canteen between 2008 and 2011.
An Integrity Commission report found numerous policy breaches at the facility, including that one employee bought $2 million of stock for the canteen, but did not follow correct procedures, and received gifts.
In another finding, a staff member made unauthorised purchases for inmates, and allowed access to contraband.
The Community and Public Sector Union is concerned the report will prejudice the Department’s investigations.
A Department spokeswoman says there are safeguards built into the investigation process to ensure procedural fairness.
The Department Secretary Simon Overland will personally deal with the code of conduct complaints.
