Media release: Election Policies Must Be Properly Costed
The CPSU today called on all political parties to properly cost election policies to avoid cost blow outs affecting future service delivery.
The union is concerned that parties are developing policies on the run during the election campaign that have the potential to impose significant costs on the tax payer thereby reducing the money available for real services. An example is the policy announced by the Tasmanian Liberals to relocate the whole of Mineral Resources Tasmania (MRT) from its base in Rosny to Burnie.
“The CPSU has always strongly supported public sector employment being spread throughout the state,” said CPSU General Secretary Tom Lynch.
“But relocating a whole business unit is a costly exercise and unless the costs are properly assessed and budgeted for they will end up coming out of the money MRT has available to provide real services to the Tasmanian mining industry,” said Mr Lynch.
