Outcry against plans to privatise Child Protection in Britain
THE BRITISH government has announced plans to outsource child protection services to private company Serco. Companies like Serco operate in a range of areas including security, corrections, health and defense and they are increasingly being contracted by governments across the world to deliver services traditionally delivered by the public sector. They usually pay lower wages, keep contracts and performance indicators secret and aren’t accountable to citizens through the normal operations of parliament.
Not only is this plan a shirking of a vital government responsibility, it also runs the risk of turning a key area like child protection into a profit making enterprise. Unsurprisingly, there’s been an outcry from academics who penned a letter outlining the dangers of such a move and saying child protection is too important to be exposed to the fickleness and failings of private companies.
