ABC Cuts Hobart rally

JOINT CPSU and MEAA Rallies are scheduled across Australia in response to flagged cuts to the ABC. Some media outlets are reporting the ABC & SBS will be cut by more than $250M over the next 3 years.

In Hobart there’s a lunch time rally on Wednesday November 19 at 12.30pm at the ABC Building (1-7 Liverpool St, near the roundabout).

If you care about cuts to your public broadcaster make sure you come along and show your support.

Read what CPSU General Secretary has to say below.

I GREW up with the ABC. My father was never very keen on commercial television but we were allowed to watch the ABC. Some of my earliest memories include Play School and Sesame Street and I remember the whole family watching Countdown. I have always been an avid news listener and the ABC brought me professional, unbiased news from around the world and cutting edge current affairs on This Day Tonight and Four Corners. Later on I remember when Rage started. Before that programing ceased late in the evening and the test pattern took over. I can’t imagine summer without long hours of test cricket on the radio. We would turn on all the radios around the house and outside as we played or worked and when a wicket fell we would rush inside to see the replay on the TV.

I love my ABC and I am going to fight to protect it from the savage cuts proposed by the Abbott government. If you support the ABC then join me in that fight.

Our Federal CPSU counterparts and their colleagues in the MEAA have organised a rally to demonstrate the support of our community for the ABC. I would like to invite you to join me by attending this lunchtime rally. I propose CPSU Members who can attend meet me at the Liverpool St end of the Elizabeth Mall at 12:15pm on Wednesday November 19 and we walk down to the ABC together. The rally starts at 12:30pm and should only run for around 30 minutes.

Don’t let Abbott gut the ABC – act now.
