JOB cuts hurt. Treasurer Gutwein is urging Tasmanians to spend up for Christmas, but his government’s public sector job cuts are likely to have the greatest effect on retail trade figures – and it’s already started.

The Tasmanian Small Business Council has said higher-end clothing retailers had already noticed a slump, which it ¬attributed to the public service job losses. Read more here.

Cuts hurt in other ways too. On Monday Tasmanian Council of Social Services chief executive Tony Reidy told the ABC: “we understand the State Government has made it clear that it will, over the period of the forward estimates, and the years to come, be cutting $100 million from the budget of the Department of Health and Human Services”. “When we have budget cuts of that nature they always disproportionately affect those people who are on low incomes or are disadvantaged”.
