Win for workers: Senate defeats Registered Organisations Bill
GOOD NEWS! The senate voted to reject the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Amendment Bill. Unpaid union officials could’ve faced fines tens of thousands of dollars for minor breaches under the ousted Bill.
Your union couldn’t serve members or communities without the contribution made by hundreds on honorary officials – Workplace Delegates, members of committees of management and those elected to our policy forming Council. We’ve representing Tasmanian public sector workers since 1897 and we’re proud of the high level of transparency, accountability and good governance we’ve displayed over that entire period.
The proposed Bill wasn’t about good governance it was an ideological attack on the rights of workers to organise and have an effective voice, but the vote to reject it helped to protect that voice.
Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie voted to reject the Bill, and we’ve written to her on behalf of Members to say thanks.
