Legislative Council: call for inquiry on forest fire readiness
IN RECENT weeks we’ve seen 50 frontline regional Forestry Tasmania workers told they no longer have a job, and there’s probably more who’ll receive bad news at the state’s headquarters soon, about a quarter of the FT workforce. The workers who are being cut are operational staff, who are, among many other specialised duties, responsible for managing forests and preventing forest fires. This is a concern for all Tasmanians.
The CPSU is calling on Tasmania’s Upper House to look into the state’s readiness for forest fires, due to the above concern, as well as the recent official announcement of an El Nino until autumn next year, bringing with it dry conditions, warmer day time temperatures that are conducive to fires.
