Alexander Spirit: Community BBQ in Devonport tomorrow

A COMMUNITY barbecue is on in Devonport tomorrow (Saturday July 18) to support Australian jobs, Australian shipping and show solidarity for the sacked crew of the Alexander Spirit. Everyone is invited to come along to the free community event tomorrow at noon on Wright St Devonport.

Background: Last Thursday 36 workers on the Alexander Spirit were notified that they would be terminated on arrival in Singapore and replaced with foreign workers. This occurred only after the workers pursued information because they had heard rumours. These workers chose not to leave port until the company had answered a number of questions.

A week ago today the Fair Work Commission ruled in favour of the employer. This meant that the Commission’s original order that no industrial action take place for a month remained in place, and the crew had to obey company orders from Teekay Shipping and sail to Singapore, where they would be replaced.
Latest: Since last week, due to illness of some crew members, the Alexander Spirit has been unable to leave the docks at Devonport because there aren’t enough people to man the ship. There are media reports of crew members suffering stress-related conditions, which is understandable. It’s an anxious situation, especially for these crew who expect to be sacked once they reach Singapore and are unaware what else will happen on arrival.

These workers need your support!

It’s about showing these workers support and sending a message about Australian jobs, shipping
