Politician pay Bill passes Tas parliament
THE PARLIAMENTARY Salaries, Superannuation and Allowances Amendment Bill 2015 passed both houses of parliament last week.
This gave politicians a 2% pay increase this week, so their base salary will go from $118,466 to $120,835 a year.
Next year the legislation will see the Tasmanian Industrial Commission (TIC) make a decision about MP salaries, but this legislation left intact the ability for politicians in both houses of parliament to overrule the TIC’s determination.
Time will tell what will happen, but this government isn’t to be trusted when it comes to pay and conditions and we all remember last year when it tried to unpick the industrial relations system that would’ve had awful impacts for our public sector members not to mention the ramifications that would flow through other workplaces.
Now that the TIC will set politicians salaries we believe public sector workers should also have remuneration set through the Commission, without the government meddling with its workers’ pay.
