“We’re not in the business of tearing up contracts”.
This is what the Treasurer Peter Gutwein told ABC radio listeners when asked by Leon Compton why the government couldn’t use parliament to override the Deed that gives the Federal Group a monopoly on poker machines and casinos in Tasmania – a Deed worth in the vicinity of $200 million a year.
It’s a pity Mr Gutwein didn’t have these same principles last year when he tried to use parliament to tear up the contract the government had with public sector workers that entitled them to a 2% salary increase last December. It seems the Hodgman government’s principles apply differently to big business and workers.
