Media Release: Not a Single Child Safety Officer Promised by Liberals
Despite the Hodgman government making around $2,500,000,000 of promises in the State election the Minister for Children, Jacquie Petrusma has failed to secure one cent to employ additional Child Safety Officers.
The last figures seen in December 2017 showed there were 494 children reported at risk who did not have a dedicated Child Safety Officer with the capacity to provide them with care and support.
“Over the past 4 years Minister Petrusma has described the child safety service as being in crisis yet she has failed to secure what the service needs – more child safety officers,” said CPSU General Secretary Tom Lynch.
“The Minister claims her redesign of the service will magically address the problems that are caused by systematic underfunding but those at the coal face know children have already fallen through the cracks and will continue to until she convinces her Cabinet colleagues to properly fund the child safety service,” said Mr Lynch.
The CPSU has gathered hundreds of signatures from Tasmanian voters who want Minister Petrusma to employ more child safety officers so vulnerable children can be kept safe.
A visual representation of those who have signed the petition will be displayed in the Elizabeth Street Mall today.
