Rally to save CSIRO jobs, stand up for science!
WE KNOW that public services help to improve all of our lives both now and in the future and scientists are critical to evidence based policy. Just one month ago on February 4 the CEO of CSIRO announced the mass axing of 350 scientists, including those who work here in Hobart. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his ministers are raiding the CSIRO of the funding it needs to continue critical research, with their latest attack climate science compounding the untold damage already done to public science. These cuts to jobs and funding will further undermine our science capability that’s been built up for decades and we will feel the impact for generations. Many of you work in jobs that fall into the science field and know how important proper funding is to carry on this important research. You also know the crippling impact that cuts can have on public sector capacity on work that benefits all of us.
On the CSIRO cuts:
CPSU Tasmanian Regional Secretary Jess Munday: “The CSIRO in Hobart is a major employer of scientists, and these same programs have already been cut by the Liberals over the last few years. We’re unclear of how many jobs in Hobart will be cut under this latest attack.”
Senior CSIRO research scientist Dr Wenju Cai told the ABC’s Simon Lauder that: “We’re talking about so many people who could lose their job, you know, we are also talking about losing Australia’s climate research capability, that we spent the past 40 years to build.”
World renowned climate scientist Professor Nathan Bindoff told the ABC this week that these cuts would undermine national activities on modelling Australia’s future climate, as well as programs at the University of Tasmania, the Bureau of Meteorology and other science disciplines at the CSIRO. Listen to the interview here.
So if you – care about local jobs, the climate, the integrity of science then –
