The Matildas are absolutely inspiring on the field – and no doubt many children will be encouraged to follow their sporting dreams from watching the Australian team play in the World Cup.
But this group of women are also paving the way for those who come after them off-field.
The Matildas have stood together in union for equal pay, recognition, and conditions.
Just before the Women’s World Cup started the players released a video pushing for equal earnings with male players.
Through their union, the Professional Footballers Association, they’ve secured amazing industrial wins that will make life better for the next generation who wears the green and gold.

Soccer isn’t the only Australian sporting code to secure union wins lately.
NRL and NRLW players also championed rights through collective bargaining after they flagged intended industrial action. Now they have reached an in-principle Agreement with the NRL.
Players also released a video before reaching this agreement.
It pays to be union – no matter where you live or where you work.
