Union Elections Delayed

The CPSU branch elections scheduled for 2020 have been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The elections for all Branch Officer and Councillor positions is normally held 4 yearly with results declared between 1 May and 30 June of that year.

As normally happens the union wrote to Fair Work back in February to advise an election was required. Fair Work provided notice to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) to conduct the election in March – just as the pandemic hit the country hard. The AEC then wrote to the CPSU advising that there would be a delay in conducting the election.

Once the AEC considers it is safe from them to undertake the election they will formally call for nominations from eligible members. You will be advised through our normal communications and delegates will be asked to post information on the Offices up for election and how members can nominate. The AEC will receive and process all nominations and where required, conduct postal ballots.

Importantly, the people currently in the elected roles in our union continue to hold those positions until the election is complete and  the AEC declares the successful candidates elected. This means that until the election is complete it’s business as usual for the current Councillors and Officers.

As a member-led, democratic union our election processes are important. We hope the delay will not discourage members from actively participating in these elections.

Tom Lynch

General Secretary
